The 5 star Prestonfield

Yep. This one is not bad. Voted the best in 2005 it is still very 'hot'. Firstly you are greeted by your black-kilted porter who may also deliver their famous Scottish breakfast to your room if you can't make it down to the sumptuous dining room.

There are numerous salons all with lots of lush red/yellow and black velvet and rich fabrics even richer antiques and rugs. Its won't be everyone's taste as it is certainly dramatic. Located in beautiful grounds, the 17th-century mansion was once a grand home of a former Mayor. There is a lovely croquet lawn if weather permits.

The dining room is one of the best in the region, expect lobster thermidor, pan-seared foie gras and wild salmon dishes plus some great Scottish beef.

Rooms: There are 24 rooms, all individual, all with modern facilities to contrast the decadent interior deco of tactile velvet wallpaper, silk brocades and some seriously beautiful antique beds. All rooms have air-con, Plasma TV, CD & DVD. Bathrooms are equally indulgent marble and Venetian glass mosaic and of course your fluffies (gown and slippers).

A perfect setting for a romantic stay. Expect to pay £260 upwards. Let us book for your and we'll provide museum passes and an itinerary.

The Glasshouse

Voted one of the sexiest and most stylish hotel in Scotland. It still has that new and shining appeal. Lots of leather and natural light flooding the foyer and the rooms. On offer are some great facilities such as the pool, rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows for uninterutped views of the lavender garden, a large and popular restaurant, gym, bars etc. The hotel has sympathetically blended its medieval exterior with modern touches.

Rooms: Modern, lots of light and glass. Big goose feather doonas. Black marble and spacious bathrooms with large baths in all rooms. Easily accessible are Princess Street and all the major Edinburgh attractions.

Check our the different rooms now. Allow £275 per night however we would like to respond with the best weekly rate. For those that like the modern touch and a great central location.

Little extras: Daily shoe shine. Some rooms have private balconies. Come back and book with us and we'll provide free Museum passes.

Tiger Lily

An award winning Boutique hotel and perfectly located to enjoy Edinburgh's fashionable shopping, bars and groovy restaurants that line the street that's if you choose not to dine in the hotel's own award winning Thai cuisine.

This place is hip. There are lovely sofas in front of fireplaces, little nooks everywhere and a very groovy bar with shocking pink stools, daring yes but it works.

Rooms: Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Decor is modern and minimalist. Expect DVD players, flat screen TV, iPod docking stations and White Company toiletries (their shop is opposite). Plus a little space. Flop into your Egyptian cotton sheets after a little night clubing, they have their own nightclub however not open all year round. And, finally a hotel that doesn't charge for mineral water also complimentary fruit. Furniture is chunky wooden pieces, fabrics are bright but the latest designs from Colefax and Fowler.

There's a lot to enjoy in this hotel. Expect to pay a little more to enjoy a stay with a difference. While not suited to children they will be warmly accommodated.

The Edinburgh Residence - 5 Stars

This is one in a group of four hotels by The Town House Country. If you are a family, the suite, particularly the top floor one is spacious and comfortable (pictured). Two large bathrooms, two televisions and a dining table for meals, breakfast is served in the room. There is no in-house restaurant but you are minutes away from Princess Street and some very good and reasonably priced Chinese and Italian choices as well as numerous pubs and fast food diners.

Service is attentive and hard to fault. When last visited they were unfortunately removing their hundred-year old lift for a modern one. There’s a small car park as the street parking is for residents only.

The exterior is a beautiful old grey-stone Georgian townhouse which adds to its appeal. Lots of comfortable sofas in the salon where you can also access the internet.

Rooms - more the size of an apartment, combining modern touches with antiques, rich fabrics and comfy Scottish charm. All are individual. Elegant dining can also be arranged at their sister hotel The Bonham just metres away however in-house dining is also offered. Looking for an elegant and no-fuss stay this is perfect however does not have the gym, spa and dining facilities as the large hotels, its boutique!
